The weather is warming up and it’s time to get outside and enjoy nature.  Luckily for us, Lake Altus is a convenient 30-minute drive from Aviator’s Landing Crash Pad.  I think it’s perfect for a day trip!

Lake Altus is approximately 6,500 acres of open water, and the park area covers 4,300 land acres.  You can water ski, jet ski, paddle boat, swim, or try out one of the water slides.  If you like to fish, the lake has largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, catfish, hybrid striped bass and white bass.

If you are looking for a new golf spot, you can always check out the Quartz Mountain Resort Park.   The park has an 18-hole golf course with a pro-shop.  Rate fees are $29 for Saturdays and Sundays.  However, if you just want to stay on the driving range, a bucket of balls will cost you $5.

The rugged granite hills and fascinating geologic history promise a unique experience for the hiking enthusiast, rock climbers, photographers and bird watchers.

There are five different trails you can choose from.

The Sunrise Trail is one-half mile long.  Don’t let the distance fool you though.  It’s considered a moderate to difficult trail.  It starts across the street from the Twin Peaks performance Hall driveway.

The second trail is called Sunset Loop.  This trail is also considered a moderate challenge, and it shares part of Sunrise Trail at the beginning.  This trail will start by the Great Plains Amphitheatre.

The Cave Trail enters the woods and climbs to a very small cave.  Quick note:  there is wildlife living in the cave!

The Twin Peaks Trail is a former roadbed.  Eventually, it will be paved and handicap accessible.  This is a great one for bird watching.

The New Frontier Trail is a moderate-level trail.  You will need sturdy hiking shoes or boots for this one!

No matter what you decide to do, this is a great day trip from Aviator’s Landing Crash Pad.  You will be glad you went!
